Open and save a .csv in 5 steps

  1. Open PaperSheets in your browser. There is nothing to install.
  2. Drop the .csv file on the start page, or choose Import a file in the File menu. Each value goes into its own cell.
  3. Edit the table: type, sort a column with Sort A to Z, add formulas, or choose Freeze first row in the Data menu so the header stays in view and is left out of the sorting.
  4. Choose File, then Download .csv.
  5. Check the numbers: a cell with the Number, Percent or Currency format is saved as it is shown. Choose Automatic format first if you need the plain number.

How PaperSheets reads and writes a .csv

In PaperSheets
Separator when openingA comma. If the file has semicolons and no commas, the semicolon is used.
QuotesA value in double quotes can contain separators, quotes (written twice) and line breaks.
SizeUp to 26 columns and 500 rows, and 2,000 characters per cell. Rows and columns beyond that are cut, and a message tells you.
EncodingUTF-8. The downloaded file starts with a byte-order mark, which helps other programs recognise the encoding.
What is savedThe calculated values from A1 to the last used cell, separated by commas, one row per line. A value with a comma, semicolon, quote or line break is put in quotes.
What is not savedFormulas, formatting, column widths and frozen rows.

Good to know

A value that starts with = is read as a formula, so a text such as =A1 in a .csv becomes a calculation. PaperSheets also opens .xlsx files (the first sheet), so you can import either format.

The Number, Percent and Currency formats follow the language of Oxyde: in Romanian the currency is RON and the decimal separator is a comma, in English the currency is USD and the separator is a dot.

Supported formats

  • Open: .csv (comma or semicolon) and .xlsx
  • Download: .csv in UTF-8
  • Limit: 26 columns and 500 rows

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a .csv that uses semicolons?

Yes. If the file has semicolons and no commas, PaperSheets reads the semicolon as the separator. A file that has both is read with commas.

Are accented letters kept?

Yes. PaperSheets reads and writes UTF-8, and the downloaded file starts with a byte-order mark so other programs recognise the encoding.

Are formulas saved in the .csv?

No. A .csv holds values, so the file has the calculated results. The sheet with its formulas stays saved in your browser.

How big can the file be?

Up to 26 columns and 500 rows. PaperSheets cuts what is beyond that and shows a message. A cell keeps its first 2,000 characters.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and saved in your browser and is not sent to a server.
