How to open and edit an .xlsx file without Excel

Open PaperSheets in your browser, drop the .xlsx file on the start page, edit the cells and download the result as .csv. It is free, needs no account and the file is not uploaded.

Open and edit an .xlsx in 5 steps

  1. Open PaperSheets in your browser. There is nothing to install.
  2. Drop the .xlsx file on the start page, or choose Import a file in the File menu.
  3. Edit the cells: type values, change formulas, format numbers, sort a column or freeze the first row.
  4. Choose File, then Download .csv, to save the calculated values as a .csv file.
  5. The sheet is also saved automatically in your browser. Download a .csv copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.

What is kept when the file is opened

In PaperSheets
SheetsOnly the first sheet of the file is opened.
SizeUp to 26 columns (A to Z) and 500 rows. Anything beyond that is cut, and a message tells you.
Values and textKept. A text cell keeps its first 2,000 characters.
FormulasKept as formulas and calculated again. A formula that uses a function PaperSheets does not have shows #NAME?.
Dates and percentagesDates appear as text such as 2026-11-06. Percentages stay percentages.
FormattingBold, italic, underline, strikethrough, text colour, fill colour, alignment, wrapped text, text size and column widths.
Not carried overBorders, merged cells, charts, images and other sheets.

What to check before you rely on the file

PaperSheets calculates 40 functions, including SUM, AVERAGE, IF, COUNTIF and SUMIF. Lookup functions are not available, so a cell that uses one shows #NAME? while the rest of the sheet keeps working. Formulas shared across many cells or entered as array formulas arrive as their last values.

Old .xls files are not opened. Save them as .xlsx first, in the program that made them.

Supported formats

  • Open: .xlsx (first sheet) and .csv
  • Download: .csv with the calculated values
  • Not opened: old .xls files

Frequently asked questions

Is my .xlsx file uploaded?

No. The file is read in your browser and saved in your browser. It is not sent to a server.

Can I download the result as .xlsx?

Not at the moment. PaperSheets downloads .csv, which holds the calculated values but not formulas or formatting.

Why does a cell show #NAME??

The cell uses a function that PaperSheets does not have, such as a lookup function. Replace it with a formula PaperSheets knows, or type the value.

Why do I see only part of my table?

A sheet has at most 26 columns (A to Z) and 500 rows, and only the first sheet of the file is read. PaperSheets shows a message when it cuts a table.

Is it free?

Yes. It is free to use and does not ask you to sign up.
